Bullying Prevention: Empower Your Kids with Martial Arts

School is back in full force! Your kids are settling into their social circles for their new grade and well acquainted with their new after school routine. As a parent, your hope is that when you drop your kids off at school, they enter a healthy and productive learning environment – one where they can socialize freely and grow into the best versions of themselves.
Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. October’s annual National Bullying Prevention Month reminds us that everyone has a role to play: children, parents, and teachers. This month is an important time to acknowledge that bullying is still prevalent and that your children may be at risk – in person and online.
According to our friends at StopBullying.gov:
  • About 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying nationwide.
  • Students ages 12–18 who reported being bullied said they thought those who bullied them: Were physically stronger or larger (40%).
  • Nationwide, 19% of students in grades 9–12 report being bullied on school property in the 12 months prior to the survey.
  • Among students ages 12-18 who reported being bullied at school during the school year, 15 % were bullied online or by text.
Clearly whether it be at school or via cyber bullying, our children are at high risk for being targeted by a bully. Don’t sit idly by and hope your child isn’t a victim of bullying. Be proactive with us! Set them up for success by enrolling them in a Martial Arts program to equip them with smart self defense and anti-bullying strategies. Total Impact is the perfect place to prepare and empower your children with the tools to protect themselves from bullies and gain self-confidence in the process!
Martial Arts training at Total Impact instills not only self-respect and self-defense, but also respect for others. Are you worried that your child might be the one doing the bullying? Total Impact’s karate programs for children and teens are a great way to turn things around…

Bullying Prevention: Empower Your Kids with Martial Arts - Total Impact
Wouldn’t you love to have peace of mind knowing your child or teen is prepared to defend themselves from bullies? Or stand up for their peers that are being bullied? Our dojo has the perfect solution to empower your children: The C.OB.R.A. System!
The C.O.B.R.A. Self Defense System

You don’t want to choose just any Martial Arts program for your child! Make sure that the instructors training your children or teen are qualified in bully prevention and able to teach smart strategies to ward off attackers and stand up for themselves! In an effort to create comprehensive self-defense training, Chris Sutton, an A.C.M.A (American Council on Martial Arts Education) certified law enforcement officer, has created the C.O.B.R.A. System. Let’s talk about what that means….

What is the C.O.B.R.A. System?

C.O.B.R.A. stands for Combat Objective Battle Ready Applications. The C.O.B.R.A. mission is to make everyone safer. It’s a highly effective self-defense system that combines close quarter combat techniques, martial arts, and the psychology of criminal intent. Instructors with C.O.B.R.A. training have completed a 10 week training course making them experts at both the mental and physical aspects of self-defense. C.O.B.R.A. is a widely used system and those who have training in it speak highly of it.

“Chris Sutton has really hit a home run with his C.O.B.R.A. program. It’s the only effective self-defense program that I would recommend and I have been in the industry over 20 years.” – Jim Graden, World Kickboxing Champion

Why COBRA?

C.O.B.R.A. is a proven system that comes highly recommended from the top experts in the field. Here’s why it’s important for your child:

  • Simple punches and kicks from children from 5-12 will not hurt or impede attackers
  • Children are easy targets for criminals
  • Schools most likely do not teach self-defense courses and if they do, it’s not required
  • Mobile phones don’t save children from dangerous situations like an abduction. 99% of victims cannot retrieve or complete a call during an attack.

The C.O.B.R.A. self-defense curriculum is designed to help children overcome these disadvantages. At Total Impact, we regularly incorporate C.O.B.R.A. Training For Kids during our Kids Karate and Teen MMA classes:

  • Kidnapping Defense
  • Advanced Child Special Striking
  • Bully & Confidence Scenarios
  • Apply Their Skill Against Bad Guys
Real-World Self Defense Strategies for Children and Teens

This video on C.O.B.R.A. youth self defense tactics walks you through potential scenarios and how a small child would be able to escape them. Chris Sutton shows a 3rd grader how to break free from different grapples and how she can use leverage despite not being as strong or as big as him. It features smart escape techniques that children of any size can use against threats and aggressors. These are the kinds of tactics your child will learn at Total Impact. This will make them feel a lot safer around strangers. You may be wondering: But what about when they are at school or around their peers? We train kids for that too!

Bully Prevention Tactics at School

StopBullying.gov says: “Kids who are bullied can experience negative physical, social, emotional, academic, and mental health issues.” Bullied kids are more likely to experience:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Changes in eating and sleeping patterns
  • Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy
  • Decreased academic performance
Let’s work together to make sure this doesn’t happen to your child!

Violence is to be avoided at all costs if possible. Remember, Total Impact is teaching self-defense, NOT how to be the aggressor. The goal is not teaching children how to fight, but how to protect themselves and their peers. Self control is one of the core principles taught at Total Impact. If your child is always getting into fights, you might think the last thing they need is a Martial Arts class, when it may actually be the perfect solution. That energy would be channeled into a healthy and safe environment that demands they respect others and themselves, and instills discipline.

For the children that are being bullied, the confidence they gain from Total Impact would inspire them to speak up for themselves and others, which is also an effective way to ward off school bullies. We encourage students to find the nearest adult to report a situation immediately. Total Impact instructors pride ourselves in our extensive bully prevention training, it’s our goal to protect the youth in our community from any threat! “Consider enrolling your child in a traditional martial arts program, such as Karate, KungFu, or Tae Kwon Do. The training at most self-defense academies does not promote the use of violence, however, having that knowledge will help your child feel more self-assured. And if your child does need to defend himself, his practice on the mat will provide a level of safety by allowing him to perform the moves instinctively when threatened. Besides learning self-defense skills – and understanding when it would be appropriate to employ them – he will take away life skills and leadership lessons that will bolster confidence throughout his life.” Huff Post

Not only do they teach about physical karate skills but also enforce concepts such as being focused and showing respect. They have also done a phenomenal job adjusting their program due to COVID.” – S.N.
