There is always something special about turning the page on a new year which means a new beginning, a new hope, and a new start. It may come as a surprise to many that about 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions give up on them by February. It’s true! Sometimes, they are unrealistic or not specific, which makes the person become frustrated and unmotivated. That’s why having a supportive community is so important.
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go at it alone! This year does not have to be like the others if you set yourself up for success and accountability. Whether you are looking to do better in the dojo, increase productivity at work, or help your kids focus better in school, Shihan Brian’s decades of experience in martial arts and goal achievement provide invaluable insight for success.
But that’s not all, to make your learning experience even more fun this January we are launching a new curriculum and initiatives! Keep reading to learn more…
Shihan Brian’s 5 Pro Tips for Realistic Goal Setting
Success in life is determined by how you set your goals and that is why they say that you are what you aim to be. Shihan Brian gives five practical tips and tricks to have a successful performance in martial arts, the workplace, school, and other aspects of life…
1. Start with the End in Mind
The key to success is clarity, and this is where most people fail. Imagine where you’d like to be at the end of the year 2025 whether it is the next belt in karate, better grades, or a promotion.
Be as specific as you can when writing goals. For example, don’t say, “I want to improve my karate skills,” but instead say, “I want to learn three new moves, and achieve my next belt by December 2025.” Specific goals help you to know where you are going and how you can measure the progress that has been made.
2. Break It Down
Large goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller, actionable steps makes them attainable. This is like going from learning the moves of martial arts and mastering to the next level of training.
For example:
- Spend 15 minutes of the day practicing.
- Take three classes per week at the very least.
- Learn one new form per quarter of the academic year.
This way, you’ll be able to complete the tasks in a step-by-step manner and will not lose motivation in between.
3. Stay Accountable
Accountability is a powerful motivator. You should tell your goals to someone you know and who can help you stick to your plans, this can be a mentor, a family member, or a friend. At Total Impact, our instructors are here to support you and cheer you on so you stay on track for success.
It is also important to keep track of your progress or your activities. Keep a record in a notebook or an application of how many classes you go for, the techniques you learn, and how your stamina has improved. This makes your growth tangible and keeps the focus in sight.
4. Embrace Setbacks as Learning Opportunities
Success isn’t always linear, and setbacks are part of the process. Shihan Brian points out to the students that perseverance is one of the most important things that martial arts can impart.
Instead of feeling discouraged, reflect on challenges and adjust your approach. Each obstacle is an opportunity to grow stronger and refine your skills. If you find that you are not making the progress you want, go back to the basics and begin again.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
Each stride made should be applauded. Celebrating milestones, no matter how small keeps you motivated and reinforces the value of persistence.
For instance, completing a tough workout, perfecting a challenging kick, or staying consistent with practice are all victories. Reward yourself in simple ways, such as enjoying a favorite snack, buying new cycling gear, or just taking time and looking at how far you’ve come. Such small incentives make the process fun and worthwhile.
How Martial Arts Training Supports Goal Achievement
Martial arts aren’t just about physical training; it’s a comprehensive practice that nurtures discipline, focus, and resilience—skills essential for achieving goals. Our programs at Total Impact Martial Arts are structured in a way that will get everyone from children to adults on the right path to achieving their objectives, whether it is in the dojo, workplace, or school.
For Kids:
- Improved Focus: Structured training sessions teach children to concentrate on tasks and minimize distractions, which enhances their ability to succeed in school and daily activities.
- Confidence Building: Each belt obtained and the technique demonstrated encourages their self-esteem, and in their minds, they are constantly reminded that the little things add up to bigger things in life.
- Goal Setting and Achievement: Martial arts also teaches children to have small, achievable goals – such as doing a kick or getting a stripe – which will help them to become persistent.
- Time Management Skills: Balancing schoolwork, activities, and martial arts classes teaches children how to manage their schedules effectively, setting a foundation for lifelong success.
For Adults:
- Stress Relief and Mental Clarity: Training provides an affirmative method of releasing stress, clearing one’s head, and achieving emotional equilibrium – requisites for handling problems in the workplace and in one’s personal life.
- Goal-Oriented Practice: No matter if your goal is to get in shape, work on your skills, or set a record, our classes are designed to guarantee steady further development.
- A Sense of Community: Surround yourself with a group of people who will encourage you to keep on the right path regardless of the task at hand.
Goal setting with effort is a powerful combination that is at the heart of our martial arts training to help you succeed in all areas of your life. Total Impact Martial Arts should be your ally in this transformational process.
